Interpol

I really wish I could say that I liked them more. They are one of those bands who have achieved much acclaim by reviewers and fans alike.  So many of my friends with highly respectable musical taste are huge fans.  Sometimes I wonder what is wrong with me? Why can’t I get into this sound? Whenever I hear them on the radio I turn it up in anticipation that this will be the time they excite me, grow on me, or at least make me want to listen. So far Interpol has let me down with their (in my opinion) uninspired songs.  To each their own, Mike, and I still think you rock.

    Uninspired

That is a little harsh. Just because they don’t sing about happy things doesn’t imply uninspired. What other music would you put such a category?

I appreciate the honesty and the attempts to like them

This is my new favorite site.

Oh yeah, this weekend is gonna kinda suck.

Hey. I never said that uninspired was a result of their “dark” sound. Maybe a better way of saying it would be that they don’t inspire me in any way. They don’t make me excited, relaxed, appreciative of their musicianship et cetera. Look, I tried to like them, as I said, BUT they just don’t do it for me. Another example of a band that doesn’t provide any emotive or cognitive reaction would be Depeche Mode. Don’t know why exactly but that’s how it is. Hope that satisfies you :-)

I was satisfied. I was merely curious by what you meant by “uninspired.” And as I said, I am really glad that you tried.

With your criterion of uninspired I would also like to add: Oasis, Coldplay, the Killers and the such. They seem to write to sell records. A good analogy (at least for me) is movies. I think that movies a la Donnie Darko suck. They try really hard to be strange and message-filled. People merely like the movie because they think that they “got it.” Guess what, everyone got it because it is some stupid vague crap that can have any meaning. Such movies are what I would call uninspired.

    u rock more.

Ok, I can respect your opinion on Oasis, the Killers, and Donnie Darko despite really liking them myself. Coldplay, on the other hand, deserves a bit more credit. It is easy to forget their first two records amidst the hoopla surrounding their most recent album, X and Y. By hoopla I mean mediocre reviews and an annoyingly arrogant lead singer. Your feelings about just trying sell records definitley fits for X & Y, but both Parachutes and A Rush of Blood… are beautiful, heartfelt, and filled with quality musicianship. Coldplay was indie at first so it doesn’t seem likely they would write to sell when nobody knew who the heck they were. It is unfortunate what successs and widespread popularity can do to an otherwise talented band. I’m sorry you feel the way you do.

I just hate Coldplay’s sound. Too much falsetto. Too much piano. Too…coldplay. Nonethless, I will try again to listen to their first album (the least I can do after all the work you put into Interpol)

    Checking Yahoo for those bands.

    Anything for the chair.
